When I first decided to create my own website, my main motivation was to enhance my online presence. Like many others, I wanted to stand out to recruiters and potential employers, ensuring that if someone searched my name, they’d find a curated space showcasing my skills and work. However, what I didn’t anticipate was how much this website would shape my mindset and creativity in ways I never expected.
A Shift in Mindset
One of the biggest changes I’ve noticed since launching my site is that I naturally think more about projects I want to work on in my free time. Before having a website, I rarely had the impulse to create just for the sake of exploring ideas, even knowing that it would be beneficial for my resume. Now, knowing that I have a platform where I can document and display my work, I find myself motivated to put effort into new ideas and projects. It’s almost like having my website has rewired my brain. I now catch myself thinking, “This would be cool to write about,” or “This would make a great blog post.” And the interesting part? I never had this urge before. I was never someone who felt the need to post on social media, but having my own space, one that I control, has sparked a new level of engagement with my own creativity.
Creativity Feeds Itself
Another unexpected outcome is that my idea list has exploded. I’ll randomly come up with a project idea that excites me, and before I know it, my list of things to work on has grown to ten or more. Having a website has given me a sense of purpose in my creative pursuits. I no longer work on things in a vacuum, I have a place to share, reflect, and iterate on my ideas. This cycle of creating, sharing, and feeling inspired to create even more has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my journey. It’s not just about having a portfolio anymore; it’s about building a digital space that evolves alongside me.
A Newfound Excitement for Learning
An unexpected but welcome consequence of this increased creative drive is that I now find myself more excited than ever about new developments in my field of interest, AI and automation. I genuinely look forward to receiving my AI newsletter every morning. I eagerly anticipate the next OpenAI livestream. Reading a blog post about building effective AI agents is no longer just an interesting activity; it’s something I truly look forward to. AI has always fascinated me, but this shift has made me feel like I’m constantly in a state of wanting to learn more, to push the boundaries of what I can work on, and to think about new possibilities. When I do learn something new, my mind immediately jumps to: How can I incorporate this into future projects? What else is possible because of this? Every piece of knowledge becomes a potential tool for innovation, and that curiosity drives me forward. This enthusiasm isn’t just something I keep to myself, I share it with my friends and colleagues, and having a website allows me to extend that excitement even further. Being able to share my thoughts, discoveries, and ideas with a wider audience is just a bonus to the already exhilarating process of learning and creating.
More Than Just an Online Presence
I started my website to be more discoverable professionally, but I gained something even more valuable; a structured way to harness my curiosity and creativity. If you’ve ever considered starting your own website, I highly encourage you to do it. You might be surprised by how much it changes your approach to learning, creating, and sharing. So, what’s stopping you from creating your own space on the internet?
